Cartographie géopolitique, l’importance du raisonnement géographique

Résumé :
La cartographie géopolitique s’appuie sur un raisonnement géographique qui transforme données, récits et choix interprétatifs en représentations du monde. Loin d’être neutre, toute carte résulte de sélections et d’arbitrages reflétant un point de vue situé, inscrit dans des contextes politiques, historiques et culturels précis. Héritière de la pensée d’Yves Lacoste et des travaux de la revue Hérodote, la cartographie géopolitique considère la carte comme un outil central d’analyse des rivalités de pouvoir, et non comme une simple illustration. La légende y occupe une place essentielle, en donnant à voir et à comprendre le raisonnement qui structure la carte. Face à l’automatisation des données, à l’esthétisation croissante et à la prolifération des cartes « express », l’enjeu est de préserver un raisonnement géographique capable de rendre intelligibles les conflits et les enjeux territoriaux contemporains, au service du citoyen.
Abstract : Geopolitical mapping : The importance of geographical reasoning
Geopolitical cartography relies on geographical reasoning that transforms data, narratives, and interpretive choices into representations of the world. Far from being neutral, every map results from selections and arbitrations reflecting a situated perspective, embedded in specific political, historical, and cultural contexts. Inheriting the thought of Yves Lacoste and the work of the journal Hérodote, geopolitical cartography considers the map as a central tool for analyzing power rivalries, and not as a mere illustration. The legend plays an essential role, revealing and explaining the reasoning that structures the map. Faced with the automation of data, increasing aestheticization, and the proliferation of « express » maps, the challenge is to preserve a geographical reasoning capable of making contemporary conflicts and territorial issues intelligible, in service to the citizen.
