Les choix politiques qui avaient guidé sa construction avaient fait du World Trade Center un symbole, mais étaient aussi l’aboutissement d’une histoire urbaine fondée sur la recherche du profit maximal. Sa destruction a été un traumatisme mais a aussi permis aux New-Yorkais d’exprimer une vision alternative de leur ville. La reconstruction du site de Ground Zero montrera si la logique économique aura été une fois encore la plus forte ou si les élites new-yorkaises auront été contraintes de composer avec les aspirations des New Yorkais à une ville plus humaine, et plus attentive à la qualité des espaces publics.

Abstract

The political choices that had presided over the building of the World Trade Center had made it a symbol but were also the product of an urban history primarily founded on the search for profit. Its destruction was highly traumatic but also allowed New Yorkers to express an alternative vision for their city. The rebuilding of Ground Zero will demonstrate whether the economic rationale will have once again be the strongest or whether New York elites will have been forced to come to terms with the people’s call for a more humane, scaled-down approach to redevelopment and a keener concern for public spaces.
